NIHR Receives the Human Rights and Justice Expert at the United Nations Development Program

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Vice President Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi, with the presence of Chairperson of the NIHR’s Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee Ms. Maria Khouri, the Acting Secretary General Mr.  Yasser Shaheen and the NIHR’s Director of Information Technology and Communication Department Mr. Fahad Al Mu’alla, received at the NIHR headquarters in the Seef District with the Human Rights and Justice Expert at the UN’s Regional Office of the Arab Countries Mrs. Marta Bakhomstrus. 

Al the beginning of the meeting, the NIHR’s Vice President welcomed the UN Development Program’s representative, praising Program’s efforts in supporting the national institutions endeavors, and emphasizing that such meeting is held within the context of international cooperation between the NIHR and the UN Development Program in order to take advantage of the Program’s expertise.

The Vice President presented a detailed explanation of the NIHR’s work and its role in the enhancement and protection of human rights.  Meanwhile, he stressed that the Kingdom of Bahrain always witnesses remarkable progress in the human rights field thanks to the reform project of His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may God protect him.

Ms. Maria Khouri further presented an illustration of the NIHR’s mechanism of receiving complaints and providing legal assistance as well as the NIHR’s observation of everything published in the mass media and social media on the human rights position.  Mr. Yasser Shaheen further dealt with the reality of work at the NIHR’s Secretariat-General as well as mechanism of providing support and services which support members of the NIHR’s Board of Commissioners, in addition to the implementation of the training and development plans set up by the Council of Commissioners.

On her part, the UN Development Program’s representative commended the great work carried out by the NIHR in the field of human rights.  At the same time, she expressed her aspiration that the coming period would witness further constructive cooperation in order to achieve the 2030 sustainable development goals.
