NIHR Participates in Seminar on Combating Hate Speech and Promoting the Values of Tolerance

Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), participated in a seminar organized by the King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance entitled “Combating Hate Speech: A Shared Responsibility Towards a More Cohesive and Tolerant Society.” The seminar was held as part of ongoing efforts to promote the values of coexistence and tolerance and to raise community awareness of the dangers of hate speech and its impact on social peace and national cohesion.

During his participation, Alderazi affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain represents a leading civilizational model of coexistence, tolerance, and respect for religious and cultural diversity, drawing upon a rich historical heritage and a constitutional and legislative framework that guarantees equality and combats discrimination and hate speech.

He noted that confronting hate speech is both a human rights and societal imperative to safeguard civil peace and strengthen national cohesion, emphasizing the NIHR’s continued commitment, in cooperation with the King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance and all relevant stakeholders, to promoting a culture of human rights and reinforcing the values of dialogue and mutual respect.

At the conclusion of the seminar, which was attended by a number of members of the Council of Commissioners, along with a distinguished group of specialists and experts, participants underscored the importance of raising awareness of responsible discourse and respect for diversity, and supporting educational, community, religious, and cultural initiatives aimed at consolidating the values of coexistence, tolerance, and dialogue. They also highlighted the importance of encouraging media outlets and digital platforms to adopt professional practices that promote mutual respect.

Participants further stressed the importance of continued cooperation among relevant stakeholders to address hate speech and its repercussions and to reinforce social cohesion and national unity. For its part, the King Hamad Global Centre for Coexistence and Tolerance reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives and programmes that promote a culture of coexistence and dialogue and to strengthening the Kingdom of Bahrain’s position as a global model for respect for diversity and the values of peace.
