Al-Fadel to US Senate Officials: “Human rights in Bahrain have always been safeguarded since the past and coexistence and tolerance are characteristics of the Reform Project”

Dr. Khalifa bin Ali Al-Fadel, Secretary-General of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), received a delegation from the US Senate officials on the sidelines of their visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain. Present were Chancellor Mr. Yasser Shahin, NIHR Assistant Secretary-General, and Mr. Fahad Al-Mualla, Director of NIHR’s Resources and Services,

During the meeting, Dr. Al-Fadel welcomed the visiting delegation and briefed them on the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the NIHR’s role in handling it in accordance with the competencies entrusted to it.  He also pointed to the progress made by the Kingdom of Bahrain in the area of human rights, stressing that the National Action Charter and the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain have laid the ground for the reforms led by His Majesty the King of Bahrain in various areas, being the first source of human rights in Bahrain.

Dr. Al-Fadel added that the human rights in Bahrain have been safeguarded since the past, as Bahrain signed an agreement with the United Kingdom in 1861 having “the prevention of slavery” among its terms and conditions, one century before the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly, stressing that coexistence, peace and religious pluralism are the most important features of the political system in Bahrain under the leadership of His Majesty the King, who is the main supporter of the freedom of religion, tolerance and peace.

Dr. Al-Fadel also stressed that the Kingdom of Bahrain have exceeded the recommendations of the “Independent Fact-Finding Commission” with great stages and steps thanks to the wise leadership, noting the progress achieved by Bahrain on the civil, cultural, economic, political and social levels.

For its part, the delegation expressed thanks for the good reception, and presented a number of questions related to the NIHR’s function and terms of reference, where the NIHR’s Secretary-General answered all the inquiries and questions of the delegation.  The visit program included a tour of the NIHR’s premises, where the delegation was briefed on the NIHR’s Call Center, Complaints Reception Desk, Training Center and Library.
