The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) participated in the 22nd meeting of the Asia and Pacific Forum (APF) for the national human rights institutions held in Bangkok in Thailand.  The NIHR’s delegation consisted of Ms. Maria Khouri, Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners, Dr. Badr Mohamed Adel, member of the Board of Commissioners, and Dr. Khalifa Al-Fadel, NIHR’s Secretary-General.

During the meeting, which was chaired by Dr. Sima Samar, head of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, the means of enhancing cooperation between the Forum, the international community and the UN agencies were reviewed, as well as the review of the Constitution of the Asia and Pacific Forum and the annual and financial reports.  There was also an interactive dialogue between the Forum and civil society organizations hat revolved around the independence of the national institutions.

The Forum discussed through two consecutive days issues and conflicts related to human rights as well as the role of the national human rights institutions in protecting women and children in these conflicts, in addition to the role of institutions and civil society in the peace and dialogue processes.

It is worth mentioning that the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the Kingdom of Bahrain has joined the Forum as a member since 2016, and is currently implementing a number of joint training programs.
