NIHR’s receives Vice President of the European Union Delegation

Within the framework of cooperation between the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) and international organizations working in the area of human rights, HE Mr. Saeed bin Mohamed Al-Faihani, Chairperson of the NIHR, received at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef district Mr. Alexis Konstantopoulos, Vice President of the European Union Delegation to the countries of the region.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Chairperson of the NIHR welcomed Mr. Konstantopoulos, commending the efforts exerted by the EU Delegation to follow up on human rights issues in the Arab region.  He also reviewed the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the role of the NIHR in dealing with him, noting the role of the NIHR in communicating with the relevant bodies to find out and understand the most important facts and developments.

For his part, Mr. Konstantopoulos referred to the comprehensiveness of the statement issued by the NIHR on the report of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom on Human Rights and Democracy for the year 2016 of the Kingdom of Bahrain, expressing his admiration for the effective role of the NIHR in following-up the issues of prisoners and detainees, by attending their trial sessions and considering the complaints submitted by them, as well as attending the declared and undeclared field visits by the NIHR for Monitoring the Human Rights situation in correctional institutions and places of detention.

The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation, stressing the importance of continuing the meetings in order to support efforts to achieve common goals.

The meeting was attended by Mrs. Dina Al-Lazi, Head of the NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up, Mrs. Rawda Al-Aradi, member of the Committee and Mrs. Shaikha Al-Elewi, Legal Researcher at the NIHR’s Legal Department.
