The Joint Working Group Holds a Coordination Meeting on Developing a Mechanism for the Implementation of the Law on Alternative Sanctions with the Participation of Private Sector Entities

The Joint Working Group has held a coordination meeting on developing a mechanism for implementing the Law on Alternative Sanctions with the participation of private sector corporates under the chairpersonship of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), and membership of the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice, Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bahrain Development of Small and Medium Enterprises Society (BDSMEs Society), Labour Market Regulatory Authority and Labour Fund (Tamkeen).

At the beginning of the meeting, Engineer Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the NIHR and Head of the Joint Working Group, valued the royal directives to continue expanding the application of the provisions of the Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures, in line with international standards and protocols contained in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights relating to the humanitarian treatment of persons deprived of their liberty in light of the respect for human rights and dignity.

The Chairman of the NIHR praised the prominent role of the Ministry of Interior in implementing the provisions of the law, which contributes to the integration of the beneficiary convicts into society and achieves crime prevention and non-recurrence, which strengthens the human rights system in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

During the meeting, Al-Derazi stated the importance of private sector’s participation in the application of alternative sanctions and measures by job opportunities and jobs that can be assigned to the convicts, or through business entrepreneurship programmes, or qualification and training, as the private sector is an essential partner in supporting sustainable development process, appreciating in this regard the pioneering role of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The participants in the meeting agreed to hold an introductory meeting with private sector corporates to present the mechanism for implementing alternative sanctions and the role assigned for those corporates, at the headquarters of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
