NIHR Chairman Participates in the 19th Regular Session of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation

The National institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by D. Malallah Al-Hammadi, Member of the Council of Commissioners, Chairman of the NIHR Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities, participated in the 19th regular session of the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was held over two consecutive days at the headquarters of the Secretariat-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIS) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

During the session, the participants stated the important role if the national human rights institutions in the Member States in following-up on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Plan 2030, and the extent of their contributions to the promotion and protection of human rights, as well as the importance of raising awareness of integrating human rights into policy-making at all levels in line with international human rights norms and standards.

They also discussed the mechanism for monitoring and investigating human rights violations through regional and international mechanisms, strengthening cooperation with the human rights mechanisms of the United Nations, and the importance of the role of national human rights institutions in promoting human rights in the OIC Member States.

A number of experts from international organisations related to human rights and specialized institutions of the OIC participated in the discussion session, as well as representatives of Member States that have the right to vote, in addition to States that have observer status in the OIC and their national institutions concerned with human rights.

At the end of the session, the discussions resulted in a number of main conclusions and recommendations, which will be included in the final document.
