NIHR Organizes Awareness Lecture on Protecting the Right to Health
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) organized an awareness lecture entitled “The Role of Civil Society Organizations in Promoting and Protecting the Right to Health in Accordance with International Human Rights Standards,” with the participation of a number of representatives of civil society organizations. The lecture was held at the Training Center at NIHR’s headquarters in Seef District.
The lecture was delivered by Mohammed Juma Fuzai, Chairperson of the General Rights and Freedoms Committee and Member of the Council of Commissioners. He reviewed the concept of the right to health from both international and national perspectives, the realization of this right for groups requiring particular attention, and the four key elements of the right to health: availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality. He also addressed tools for measuring progress in the realization of this right.
The lecture highlighted the role of civil society organizations in promoting the right to health through raising awareness, providing information on health rights and complaint and remedy mechanisms, advocacy, and capacity-building. It also addressed the use of human rights indicators to measure the realization of the right to health and identify gaps, contributing to evidence-based recommendations and strengthening follow-up and accountability mechanisms.
The lecture forms part of a series organized by NIHR for relevant working groups from civil society organizations, as part of its efforts to strengthen engagement and partnership with civil society and enhance their capacities in the field of human rights, thereby supporting their role in promoting and protecting rights and freedoms and fostering a culture of human rights within society.
