Statement by NIHR on the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Election to the United Nations Security Council
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) warmly welcomes the election of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, following its successful candidacy which received the support of 186 out of 187 voting member states during the session of the UN General Assembly.
This remarkable diplomatic achievement reflects the international community’s recognition of Bahrain’s foreign policy, which is grounded in the principles of mutual respect, constructive dialogue, international cooperation, and positive engagement with global issues. These principles are fully aligned with the universal values of human rights — most notably, peace, security, justice, and sustainable development.
NIHR commends the balanced and responsible approach pursued by the Kingdom of Bahrain under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and with the continued support and guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. This approach has strengthened the Kingdom’s international reputation as a state committed to its global obligations and dedicated to contributing meaningfully to the foundations of international peace and security.
NIHR views Bahrain’s membership in the Security Council as a valuable opportunity to highlight its pioneering efforts in promoting rights and freedoms, and to actively contribute to shaping decisions and policies that enhance the protection of human rights worldwide — guided by principles of justice, human dignity, and a balanced approach that respects both security needs and fundamental rights.
The National Institution for Human Rights reaffirms its full support for the Kingdom’s efforts to enhance its international presence and uphold the noble values that bring nations and peoples together through understanding, cooperation, and mutual respect.
