Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) meets with the Member of the European Parliament for Poland

On the sidelines of its European tour, a delegation of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), headed by His Excellency Mr. Said Bin Mohamed Al-Faihani, met with HE Mr. Tomasz Piotr Poręba, Member of the European Parliament for Poland at his office in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.

His Excellency Mr. Said Bin Mohamed Al-Faihani briefed Mr. Tomasz Piotr Poręba on the role of the NIHR its establishment by royal order in 2009 and the consequent developments and amendments to support the independence of the institution and grant it more competencies to make them compatible with the Paris Principles governing the status and functioning of national institutions.

The meeting touched on the issue related to the decision taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the Arab Republic of Egypt to sever diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar. The NIHR’s Chairperson explained that the countries taking boycotting measures against Qatar have taken into account the humanitarian and human rights aspect in line with the sound directives to take care of the humanitarian aspects involving closely related families to preserve family fabric in recognition of the brotherly Qatari people.

The NIHR’s Chairperson explained that the allegations made by the National Human Rights Committee in the State of Qatar of collective punishment against the brotherly people of Qatar by the boycotting countries of Qatar are unrealistic, adding that it would be have better for them as a human rights institution to advise against any support and financing of terrorism, which violates human rights.

For his part, MEP Mr. Tomasz Piotr Poręba thanked Mr. Al-Faihani for this detailed explanation and the background to the issue of severing diplomatic relations with Qatar for supporting and financing terrorist groups. He also commended the humanitarian role played by the NIHR in protecting and promoting human rights in Bahrain.
