NIHR Congratulates General Directorate for Correction and Rehabilitation for Winning Award for Being the First Correctional Institution in the Middle East in the Area of Implementation and Compliance with International Health, Safety and Hygiene Prot

Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), congratulated His Excellency the Minister of Interior on the occasion of the General Directorate for Correction and Rehabilitation winning the award for being the first correctional institution in the Middle East in the area of implementation and compliance with international health, safety and hygiene protocols against Coronavirus, launched by the French company (BUREAU VERIT), specialized in international quality standards, stating that this achievement is added to the achievements of the Kingdom of Bahrain at the level of excellence in correctional institutions.

Ms. Khoury considered that winning this award by the General Directorate for Correction and Rehabilitation is an administrative achievement in light of the capabilities, potential and sincere desire of correctional institutions to develop work, in light of its continuous endeavors to achieve the highest quality performance levels through which respect for the rights of inmates is taken into account, appreciating at the same time the constructive cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the NIHR to improve the level of dealing with the rights of inmates.

For his part, Mr. Khaled Abdulaziz Alshaer, NIHR’s Vice-Chairperson, praised this achievement that is added to the human rights system in the Kingdom of Bahrain and strengthens the track record in the field of preserving the rights of inmates in correction and rehabilitation centres, as this achievement comes to consolidate the efforts, important steps and constant and direct interest of the Minister of Interior to achieve commitment to the highest levels of precautionary health measures.

Similarly, the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners stated that the exceptional efforts made by the Bahrain team in the area of public health promotion have been useful in preserving health, especially for inmates in correction and rehabilitation centres, considering that the ongoing achievements by the Ministry of Interior in various areas reveal its role in continuing the diligent work under the wise leadership of His Majesty the King of the country and the diligent follow-up by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, stating that this achievement is counted for the Kingdom of Bahrain in terms of human rights and reflects its local and international stand.

Based upon the keenness to ensure that all citizens and residents access their basic rights guaranteed by the constitution and the relevant laws, especially those arrested in correction and rehabilitation centers, the NIHR is continuously and directly following up with the concerned parties in correction and rehabilitation centres the precautionary measures taken to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus among inmates and to ensure the continued provision of health services.
