Chairperson of the NIHR meets Hungary MP, Member of the European Parliament

09 Jul 2017

NIHR’s delegation, headed by Mr. Saeed bin Mohamed Al-Faihani, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), held a meeting with Hungary MP Adam Kosa, member of the European Parliament, where he reviewed the work of the NIHR and its role in the protection and promotion of human rights, in addition to a brief on the new composition of the council of Commissioners, which was issued last April, and his election as Chairperson of the NIHR, as well as the work of NIHR’s permanent committees.

He also presented a brief on the issue of severing the diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Egypt, pointing out that the National Human Rights Committee in the State of Qatar has repeatedly called the severing a “siege”, which is illogical given the high directives to consider the humanitarian cases of the joint families in recognition for the brotherly Qatari people.

Chairperson of the NIHR pointed out that the severing of relations is a sovereign matter of each country to protect its national security and has nothing to do with human rights in any way.  He added that the “siege” is usually through international resolutions, stressing at the same time that the Qatari airspace and territorial waters are open, which ensures freedom of movement.

Chairperson of the NIHR stressed that it is important for the National Human Rights Committee in the State of Qatar to say the right names and not to mix papers and push human rights into a purely political and security crisis.
