NIHR Starts to Activate the Concepts of Green Policy

09 May 2017

In a step to emphasize the commitment to adhere to the principles and concepts of the environmental dimension and the importance of preserving sustainable development, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has devised and applied the concepts of Green Policy and taken measures to implement them through programs and action plans.

Dr. Khalifa Al-Fadel, Acting Secretary General of the NIHR, stressed that this approach aims to strengthen efforts to create the necessary factors for a healthy and clean environment and involves multiple benefits at the economic level as a result of rationalization of spending resulting from the application of some Green Policy actions.

He explained that the term “Green Policy” means the development of a general rule to be adhered to by the NIHR with regard to environmental issues as well as procedures and initiatives that will have a direct positive impact in this regard.  He pointed out that such measures emphasize the NIHR’s keenness to contribute to the preservation and protection of the environment and to take all actions and measures in that direction.

Dr. Al-Fadel also stressed that the approach to implement the Green Policy in the NIHR will include a comprehensive list of the activities by the NIHR as well as a study of their environmental impacts and implications, in addition to raising the awareness of NIHR’s staff of the various aspects of this matter, making them feel their importance and involving them in bringing about the required change through surveying their ideas and proposals in this area in order to develop an effective environmental policy for the NIHR.  He pointed out that a number of measures have already been taken by the NIHR in this context, such as expanding the use of email and converting internal paper forms into electronic ones, which have resulted in significant saving of consumed time and paper, due to keeping soft copies of correspondences rather than hard copies, activating the electronic archiving system for NIHR’s documents, maximizing the rationalization of electricity and water consumption and expanding the recycling of recyclable materials.
