In line with its role in enhancing and spreading a culture of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain and extending bridges of cooperation with civil society organizations, the National institution for Human Rights (NIHR) organized the 3rd Forum, via videoconferencing for a number of civil society organizations operating in the field of health.

The event was opened by Mr. Khaled Abdul-Aziz Al-Sha’er, NIHR’s Vice-Chairperson, by thanking all the participants in the forum for their permanent cooperation with the NIHR, pointing out that the organization of this forum is based upon NIHR’s responsibility and role towards civil society, which is an essential partner in the field of promoting and protecting human rights on the one hand, and providing members of these organizations with knowledge and refining their skills in the training field on the other hand, in order to ensure sustainable protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, through joint cooperation in the field of receiving complaints, providing legal aids and monitoring human rights conditions, as well as cooperation to examine the compatibility of legislative and regulatory provisions with regional and international treaties on human rights issues and recommending appropriate legislative amendments.

Moderated by NIHR Vice-Chairperson and Mrs. Deena Al-Ladhi, member of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, the forum covered three main themes that focused on community partnership between civil society organizations, competent official authorities and the NIHR, and in particular the right to health.

The first theme dealt with identifying aspects of cooperation between the NIHR and civil society organizations, especially in the field of receiving complaints and providing legal aids, and building the capacity of their staff through organizing training courses and exchanging expertise and experiences in the field of human rights, basically the right to health.

The second theme dealt with a mechanism for examining the compatibility of legislative and regulatory provisions in regional and international treaties concerned with the right to health, recommending legislative amendments that are deemed appropriate, and holding meetings and consultative summits with the concerned national authorities with the aim of resolving important issues in the field of health.

The third and last theme discussed identifying the difficulties and challenges faced by civil society organizations, each within their own competence, and how the NIHR contributes to providing support and assistance to these organizations in order to develop them and at the same time encourage the government to provide them with more support.

At the conclusion of the forum, the discussions resulted in a number of findings and recommendations aimed at strengthening and activating community partnership with civil society organizations, promoting and spreading awareness in areas related to health and the development of health services, and activating continuous communication with the concerned authorities in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
