National Institution participates in the International Conference on "Penal reform and human rights: the reality and aspirations."

Secretary-General of the National Institution for Human Rights HE Dr. Ahmed Abdullah Farhan presented a research paper on "the role of national human rights institutions in the reform of the criminal justice system" during the international conference on "The penal reform and human rights: the reality and aspirations", which was held under the patronage of His Majesty King Abdullah Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein, king of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and was inaugurated by the Minister of Justice HE Dr. Bassam Talhouni a representative of the King.

The conference was organized by the High Commissioner for human Rights,  the Penal Reform International,  the Directorate of public Security and the Management of Correction and Rehabilitation Centers in the Kingdom of Jordan with support from the Swedish development Agency (SIDA ).


Participants at the conference discussed the international and regional framework of criminal justice, as well as the latest developments that have occurred to them during the past ten years, and the extent of consistency, in terms of the application, with the national realities in the Middle East and North African countries.

They also discussed the best practices and positive experiences at the international and regional levels for some programs and initiatives and for legal amendments that reflect the practical application of the international legal framework within harmonization of local realities with human rights standards.

It is noteworthy that the International Conference experienced  intensive presence of more than a hundred specialist in the field of human rights around the world, including activists, experts, government representatives and directors of Arab prisons and the media as well as representatives from the Arab League,  the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the European Union, the African Union's office, and with the participation of a number of national human rights institutions in the world.
